Privacy policy
The short version
- We collect only what the app needs to work: your account email and the things you choose to save.
- No ads, no advertising trackers, no analytics, and we never sell or rent your information.
- You can lock your journal with end-to-end encryption, or keep it on your phone only.
- You can delete your account and data at any time from Settings.
This policy explains how Wilella LLC ("we", "us") handles information in The Prayer Pen app and on prayerpen.app (together, "the Service"). If you have questions, email hello@prayerpen.app.
What we collect
Your account
To create an account you give us an email address, a password and, if you like, a first name. Your password is handled by our sign-in provider and stored only in a scrambled (hashed) form. We never see it.
What you save in the app
Journal pages, prayers, highlights, margin notes, drawings, photos you add to pages, reading progress, plans, settings and similar content are saved to your account so they're there on every device. If you turn on encryption or phone-only storage, this works differently. See Your choices below.
Who can read what you save
Unless you turn on encryption, what you save is stored in a form our systems can read. It's protected by a secure connection and encrypted storage, and only your account can open it in the app. The people who run The Prayer Pen have technical access to the database. We don't read your journal or prayers, and we'd only look at your data if you ask us to help with a problem or the law requires it. If you turn on encryption, we can't read your encrypted content at all.
Study groups
If you create or join a group, your display name for that group, your posts and your reactions are visible to the other members of that group. The group owner can delete posts in the group. If you report a post, we receive the report so we can review it.
Feedback
If you send feedback from the app, we receive your message along with your phone type, operating system version, browser, screen size and the app version. This helps us fix problems. It's linked to your account so we can follow up.
Things we don't collect
We don't collect your location, contacts, or advertising identifiers. We don't use analytics or advertising tools, and we don't build a profile of you.
How we use it
- To run the Service: sign you in, save and sync your content, and run study groups.
- To respond to you, fix problems and improve the app based on feedback you send.
- To keep the Service safe, including reviewing reported group posts.
- To meet legal obligations.
We don't use your journal or prayers for advertising, and we don't sell, rent or trade your information.
Your choices
End-to-end encryption
In Settings you can lock your journal. Your journal pages, prayers, notes and other personal content are then encrypted on your device before they're saved, using a key that only you hold. That key is unlocked with a passkey (such as Face ID or Touch ID) or a recovery code you keep. We store only a locked copy of the key, so we can't read your encrypted content. If you lose both your passkey and your recovery code, we can't recover your encrypted content for you.
Your email, group posts, feedback and some basic settings aren't covered by this encryption, because the Service needs to read them to work.
Phone-only storage
You can choose to keep your journal and prayers on your phone only. They're then not sent to our servers at all, and they won't sync to your other devices. Logging out or clearing your browser data removes them, so back them up first (Look back › Back up my journal).
Access, export and deletion
You can see and edit everything you've saved inside the app, and export your journal as a PDF. You can delete your account in Settings › Account › Delete my account. This deletes your account, your saved content, groups you own, and your group posts and reactions. Feedback you sent may be kept without your name or account attached. You can also email us to ask for a copy of your data or for deletion.
Services we use
We rely on a small number of providers to run the Service. They process information only to provide their service to us.
| Provider | What for | What they receive |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Accounts, sign-in and data storage (servers in the United States) | Your account details and the content you save (encrypted content stays encrypted) |
| Netlify | Hosting the website and app | Standard web request information, such as IP address and browser type |
| Google Fonts | The fonts used in the app and website | Standard web request information when fonts load |
| Your phone or browser's speech service | Turning your voice into text when you use Talk | Audio while you speak. Depending on your device this may be processed by Apple or Google. |
We may also share information if required by law, to protect someone's safety, or as part of a business transfer, in which case this policy would continue to apply to your information.
On your device
The app stores a copy of your content and settings on your device (in your browser's storage) so it opens quickly and works offline. If encryption is on, your key is kept in your device's secure browser key store and can't be copied out. We don't use advertising cookies.
Security
Information is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and access to stored data is limited so each person can reach only their own content. No system is perfectly secure, which is why we offer end-to-end encryption for the most personal content.
How long we keep it
We keep your information while you have an account. When you delete your account, your data is removed from our active systems right away, and from provider backups as they roll over.
Children
The Prayer Pen is meant for adults and teens with a parent's permission. Kids mode is a feature for parents to use with their children on the parent's own account and device. It doesn't create a separate account for the child or collect information from the child. We don't knowingly create accounts for children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
Where you live
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or move your information, or to object to how it's used. You can do most of this in the app, or email us and we'll help. We'll respond within the time required by law.
Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
