Getting started

How do I add The Prayer Pen to my home screen?

iPhone or iPad (Safari):

  1. Open prayerpen.app/app in Safari.
  2. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow).
  3. Choose Add to Home Screen, then Add.

Android (Chrome):

  1. Open prayerpen.app/app in Chrome.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu.
  3. Choose Add to Home screen or Install app.

It then opens full screen, like any other app.

Is there an App Store or Google Play version?

Not yet. They're coming. Your account and journal will carry over, so you can start now in your browser.

Does it cost anything?

No. Reading, journaling, prayer, journeys and quiet time are free, with no ads.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Once the app has loaded, it opens without a connection and syncs your changes when you're back online. To read every translation and the commentary offline, go to Settings › Account › Download for offline (about 65 MB).

Your account

I forgot my password.

On the sign-in screen, tap Forgot your password? and we'll email you a link to set a new one. Check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive within a few minutes.

Will my journal be on my other devices?

Yes. Sign in with the same email and everything syncs, unless you've chosen phone-only storage.

How do I delete my account?

Tap your initial › Settings › Account › Delete my account, then tap again to confirm. This permanently removes your account and everything in it. Consider backing up your journal first.

Privacy and encryption

Can The Prayer Pen read my journal?

Without encryption, your journal is private to your account, and we don't read it. Like most apps, though, our systems can technically access it. With Lock your journal turned on, your pages are locked on your phone before they're saved, and we only ever see scrambled text. Not even we can read it.

What does "Lock your journal" do?

It turns on end-to-end encryption. Your journal pages, prayers and notes are locked on your phone before they're saved, and only you can unlock them, with Face ID, Touch ID or your recovery code. Not even we can read them.

I got a new phone. How do I unlock my journal?

Sign in, then enter your recovery code when asked. Afterwards you can add Face ID on the new phone in Settings › Privacy and security › Add Face ID unlock on this device.

I lost my recovery code.

If you can still unlock the app with Face ID on one of your devices, open Settings › Privacy and security › Make a new recovery code. Save it somewhere safe, like a password manager or on paper. If you've lost both your passkey and your code, your encrypted content can't be recovered. That's what keeps it private.

What is phone-only storage?

Your journal and prayers stay on this phone and are never sent to our servers. They won't sync to other devices, and logging out removes them, so back up from Look back › Back up my journal.

Using the app

What does "Day 3 of 7" mean on Today?

The weekly lesson follows the calendar week. Sunday is Day 1 and Saturday is Day 7, so everyone is on the same day together.

What are grace days?

Grace days protect your streak. If you miss a day, one is used automatically so your streak keeps going. You start with two, can hold up to three, and earn another every seven days.

How do I join a study group?

Ask the group owner for the invite link or code. Open the link, or go to Groups › Join with a code. You choose the name other members see.

How do I make the text bigger or easier to read?

Settings has Bible text size, plus accessibility options for larger text, an easy-read font, high contrast, bold text and reduced motion.

How do I report a post in a group?

Under the post, tap Report post. We review every report. You can also tap Hide posts from that person to stop seeing their posts.
